home prep

It’s always better to be proactive as opposed to reactive, and this mantra is never more true than when it’s applied to preparing your home for the warmer months. As spring starts to make its presence known, there are plenty of cheap, simple tasks you can do to ensure your home is ready for whatever comes your way.

Check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors

For the cost of a few batteries you can give yourself peace of mind this spring. Now is the perfect time to do a house-wide sweep of your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, making sure they are all in working order. During the warmer months, we do more cooking for outdoor get-togethers and use plenty of gas to fire up the grill. All of these things increase the risk of fire and carbon monoxide poisoning.

Replace your air filters

The switchover to air in the spring/summer is the perfect time to replace your home’s air filters. Old, clogged-up air filters can not only damage your entire HVAC system, but they can also make your energy costs skyrocket. Apart from that, clean air filters mean cleaner air, and since spring brings its fair share of allergens, this is all the more important.

Give your windows a solid cleaning

For the price of some window cleaner, you can give your home better quality natural light during the months when the sun is at its best. In less than an hour, you can wipe away a season’s worth of dirt and grime, bug splatter, and bird droppings. Once temperatures shoot up, cleaning the outdoor side of windows becomes a sweaty pain. Get it done now to save yourself a headache.

Clean out the garage

As the seasons change there is a greater imperative to keep your car parked in the garage. For one, it protects the automobile. It also prevents you from the pain of a burning hot seat or having to wait for the A/C to kick in to cool your car down to a comfortable temperature. Go ahead and clean and organize your garage so you can hold a garage sale while the weather is nice. Check out these tips for organizing your garage.

Get those gutters in working order

Your gutter system does a lot more for your home than you might realize. Between falling leaves, twigs, and rain showers, your gutters are going to work overtime. Take the time to give them a thorough cleaning before things get dicey. As clogged gutters can lead to water overflow and flooding to your basement/crawlspace and damage to your home’s foundation, this is truly one of those tasks where an hour now could save you thousands of dollars in repairs later on.

Prep a mudroom

Even if you don’t have a true mudroom in your home, you can create one at an entry point. Put down indoor/outdoor rugs and build/buy a wooden shoe rack. During the warmer seasons’ we tend to do a lot more traipsing in and out of the house, bringing in dirt and debris, so you’ll be happy you took the time to prep an entry. It will certainly save you time on housekeeping down the road.

Spring home preparation is better done sooner rather than later, as every little step you take can help you down the road. Most of these tasks are cheap (less than $30) and take little to no time (less than an hour). Save yourself a headache. Do it now.
