Home Modified: Where to Plan Improvements before Cold Weather
Written by SayHomeBuy Admin // 2016/08/23 // Improving the Home // No comments
Winter is just around the corner and there are a number of home improvements that should be completed beforehand. These improvements are relatively easy to perform and will make the cold winter months more tolerable and affordable. You should plan for these improvements long in advance of the start of winter since some of them can take a bit of time, but all are worth the effort.
Doors & Windows
You’d be surprised how much energy your house wastes due to faulty or improper seals around doors and windows. You can easily seal these portals to the outside using various sealing methods, including weather stripping and caulk. Windows themselves might need to be changed out as well. Even a perfectly sealed window will release excessive amounts of heat during the winter if it is only a single pane. Insulated windows are just as easy to install as normal windows and they begin to pay for themselves once they start reducing heat loss.
Insulation
Your home is designed to keep the environment outside separate from your cozy internal space, but that is difficult to do without proper insulation. Fiberglass insulation will certainly do the trick, but many modern homes are made with foam insulation. These foam insulators are easy to apply, and provide exponentially greater protection than older forms of insulation. Older homes can also benefit from added insulation as well. Many older homes weren’t properly insulated to begin with, and what little insulation was used is most likely ineffective at this point.
Roofing
While this is one home improvement that you should hire out to a professional, it is a good idea to reinforce or even replace portions of your roof before winter. A professional roofing company like Roland’s Roofing will be able to tell you which parts of the roof are adequate to stand up against the winds of winter and which areas need some further attention. The roof is your home’s first line of defense against the elements, and winter produces some of most fierce weather imaginable.
Prepping for winter is all about considering ways to conserve energy by protecting your home from heat loss and damage from the elements. These examples are just a few of the factors that can be improved before winter, but they are some of the most vital.
