Despite the great abundance of appliances, amenities and gadgets, intended to make the life of every home owner easier, they can be pretty pricey and instead of saving you money and creating a convenient and cosy atmosphere, they can lead to unnecessary expenses. Performing regular cleaning activities can also save you a lot on money.

The dirt at a neglected property can be really tough to remove but if you do some vacuuming and dusting, you will see that the small quantities of dirt can be easily removed with home made detergents. However, living in a modern home that is stylishly furnished and convenient doesn’t mean that you can cut down on the bills. You just have to be proactive, make some alterations and if you do the calculations, you will see that you will going to save a considerable amount of money:

  • First of all, try to fix all the leaks that add an extra amount of money to your bill. Getting a low flow fixture is recommended as well. The same thing applies to the shower heads.
  • If you decide to take up some significant home improvement procedures, don’t miss to insulate your house. The insulation will keep the property cool during the hot summer months and warm during the harsh winter, which, respectively, lessens the cooling/ heating expenses.
  • Have you paid attention to the light bulbs you are using? If they are regular ones, hurry up and replace them with fluorescent. They are said to be more durable and energy – saving.
  • Another reason for the high electricity bills is the draught from the windows. No matter how long you keep the air conditioner turned on, the temperature gets the lower in the winter and higher in the summer. You can easily fix this problem by visiting the hardware store and buying weather stripping materials that prevent the heat/ cool loss. In addition, if you have some spare money, don’t hesitate to change the windows with double glazing ones.
  • It is a well known fact that the humidity can cause severe damages to every house and all of a sudden you realise that the time and efforts you have devoted to the home improvement procedures was a complete waste of time because now you have to clean everything up and repaint. Avoid such an unpleasant outcome by installing a dehumidification system in your basement. These are reasonably priced and you will definitely get your money worth.
  • The newer your kitchen appliances are, the less energy they use. You can not compare the efficiency of a brand new refrigerator with the qualities of a 20- years old one. The same rule applies to the stove, the microwave, the washing and dishwashing machine. Although it will take a long period of time to the new appliances to pay for themselves, the electricity bill will not be that huge.
  • Choose easy to clean surfaces such as a leather sofa, a marble countertop for the kitchen, appliances that don’t need any special treatment and special detergents. Try your best to invest in a good looking, fashionable furniture that is not too demanding.

It doesn’t matter if you make these home improvements with the aim of selling the property or making it a neat and cosy place where you feel comfortable, your efforts will be highly appreciated by the future buyers or your family. The payback time can hardly be defined but the home improvement procedures, mentioned above, are definitely efficient in reducing the expenses.
