If your home is looking a little run down nowadays, it may be time for a little sprucing up. The good news is that sprucing up doesn’t need to be expensive. Here are six home projects that won’t break the bank but will give your home its own customized look:
Add A Granite Counter Top
Granite counter tops aren’t as expensive as a homeowner may think. After all, granite is among the most abundant types of rock on earth. Granite comes in a surprising variety of colors besides the usual salt and pepper, is very tough and easy to take care of. Just make sure that the cabinet or vanity is strong enough to hold a granite slab without buckling. A granite counter top needs to be installed by a professional for the best results.
Add Crown Molding
Crown molding, a strip of decorative wood installed along the very top of the wall, adds a touch of class to an otherwise drab room. A DIYer with basic carpentry skills and a power miter saw can install crown molding over a weekend. Crown molding width ranges from four and an eight inch for the elaborate molding to about an inch and a half for the simpler cove or bed moldings. Crown molding adds dimension and can instantly look any room look taller and bigger.
Add Mosaic Tile to the Floor
Mosaic tile comes in sheets that are easy to lay for a DIYer, though it does take some careful measuring. This type of tile is a beautiful solution for a small bathroom or powder room. You can also use mosaic tile in the kitchen or bathroom for a splash that will transform the look of the room. Consider colors that are different than the rest of the room, but that are complimenting to the overall feel of the room.
Replace a Faucet
If your faucet looks like it was first installed in the 1970s or if it indeed was installed in the 1970s, it might be time for a swap out. This can also be a job for a DIYer and may not even take a weekend to complete. For the kitchen, choose a finish that compliments the the colors of the microwave, refrigerator and oven or stove.
Add New Drapery Rods
If the windows look a bit boring, it might be time to give them a new look. The new look will determine where the rods will be hung, so the homeowner should take time to figure out what sort of look he or she will want for the window. This can include cafe curtains, curtains hung at the ceiling, hung at the window casement or mounted inside or outside the casement. Using curtains that are taller than the window and reach the floor give the impression that it is bigger.
Add Some Shelves
Everyone needs new storage, and attractive shelves can also be created and installed by a DIYer. The kitchen and bathroom are where shelves are most needed, so it’s a great place to start. Consider using vertical shelving to make sure you aren’t taking away from the space you already have.
These are only six of many ways a home doable home project can give a home a whole new, customized look. These tips can get you started on transforming your home exactly the way you want.
