How Frugal People Revive Their Dying Lawns

Is your newly purchased home’s lawn looking a bit under the weather? If so, you’re probably groaning at the prospect of spending a small fortune just to perk it up again. Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be this way. Despite what many homeowners think, you can revive your dying lawn without breaking the bank. Here are a few tips that can help.
Laying Sod
If your lawn has been obliterated by drought, weeds or sub-par growing conditions, the best course of action may be to lay sod. With re-seeding, there is a lot of extra cost, time and effort involved. Furthermore, if the seed doesn’t take the first time, you have to spend even more money trying again. Sod, from a company like Western Turf Farms Ltd that sells top soil in Vancouver, is much simpler. The grass is already grown, so it just needs a bed of rich topsoil and a chance to send out roots.
Compost Tea
If you’re a fan of home composting, then you already have everything you need to give your ailing lawn a health boost. Simply allow compost to steep in a bucket of water and use it to water your lawn. Compost is an extremely good source of all the nutrients a lush, vibrant lawn requires. Plus, unlike chemical fertilizers, you can do this as often or as little as you want without fear of causing further harm.
Raking
Sometimes, a good raking may be all that is needed to revive an unhealthy looking lawn. Over time, your lawn will develop a thick layer of dead grass known as thatch. If it is allowed to accumulate too much, it can prevent adequate air circulation, harbor pests, promote grass diseases and make your lawn look brown and sparse. Raking the thatch out of your lawn will prevent this, and will also remove leaves and other debris that can suffocate your grass. Once you’ve finished with the raking, feel free to add the resulting materials to your compost heap so they can turn into something that helps your lawn thrive.
Water Less
Are you tired of spending a fortune just to water your lawn? In that case, you’ll be glad to know that abundant watering isn’t as necessary as you might believe. Grass can develop a very deep root system that allows it to pull adequate moisture up from far beneath the soil. However, if you water it all the time, it will actually develop a shallower root system. This will make it more susceptible to drought, disease and hard winters.
Lawn care may seem like a tedious and costly venture, but it doesn’t have to be. By utilizing these simple and inexpensive methods, your lawn can once again be the envy of the neighborhood.
